Apple has just released iOS 17, the latest version of its mobile operating system. This update brings new features for iPhone users, even if they don’t plan to buy the newest iPhone 15 or iPhone 15 Pro.

However, there’s a catch. Just like last year when some older iPhone models were left behind with iOS 16, iOS 17 won’t support the iPhone 8 or iPhone X, which were released in 2017. This means you’ll need an iPhone from 2018 or later to get the latest iOS 17.

Apple has a history of supporting older devices with software updates for several years. For instance, the original iPhone and iPhone 3G received two major iOS updates, but later models typically get updates for five to six years. An interesting example is the iPhone 6s, which came with iOS 9 and received updates all the way to its seventh iOS version. This long support is impressive and shows how technology can outlast many human generations.
